Methodology and tools are your choice. We are selling neither of them. To be most effective your organization must implement a common project management process. You can build one yourself. Or you can adopt (or have adopted) an approach based on one of some established standards:

  • Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK®), the standard of the Project Management Institute (PMI).
  • PRINCE2®, owned by the Office of Government Commerce (OGC) of the UK government
  • Tenstep a methodology derived from PMBOK® but detailing the 'body of knowledge' in ten practical processes based on the waterfall model
  • ISO100006:2003, Quality management ? Guidelines to quality in project management. Can be combined with PMBOK® for more focus on quality issues that can impact projects. Possible base for auditing the project process.
  • Capability Maturity Model Integration(CMMI) a process improvement approach that provides organizations with the essential elements of effective processes.
  • Agile specifically addresses software development project. It departs from traditional 'command-and-control' and waterfall model approach. But with different naming, it can be regarded as compatible with PMBOK® as explained by Project management professional (PMP) Michele Sliger. Agile Project Management complements ideally Extreme Programming.
